Violin Sonata In G Minor Was Originally Composed By The Devil

Stories of people who allegedly made Faustian pacts with the Devil is common in the rock or metal genre. Allegedly these musicians pawned their souls to the Devil in exchange of fame and virtuosity in their preferred instrument. One of the earliest stories involving music with the demonic touch is all about a violin piece that was inspired by a Demon who appeared in Giuseppe Tartini's dream. Tartini told a story of how a Devil played an extremely complex musical piece in front of him. In his dream, he was blown away of how the Devil masterfully executed a violin piece. When Tartini awoke from the strangest dream he ever had, he wrote the sonata piece that he last remembered from the Devil.

Giuseppe Tartini told his astronomer friend Jerome Lalande about his mystical encounter:

"One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy.

He named the piece Sonata in G Minor or The Devil's Trill Sonata. He ecstatically announced that the Devil's Trill is the best piece that he ever wrote. However, Tartini claimed that he failed to capture the original grandeur of the piece that the Devil played in front of him. His disappointment to replicate the original piece depressed him.

I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me."
-Giuseppe Tartini

The account written above would be the most reliable for now. The exact date of composition was still unknown up to this day. Many music historians speculate that the dream took place between 1713 to 1740. The Sonata in G Minor left an indelible mark in the classical music genre. Interestingly the Sonata in G Minor may have inspired a plot device in Hunter X Hunter manga/anime. In the series a certain Sonata of Darkness was mentioned in the Yorknew City Ark. The Sonata of Darkness was composed by Satan according to one of the characters in the series named Melody.
